Capstone has a full time teacher, certified by the State Board of Education, who serves as a liaison between the residents who are still in secondary school and their school guidance counselor. Schoolwork is maintained to preserve academic status during treatment. Special tutoring may be utilized to enhance academic performance. For adolescent males, there is a strong correlation between drug abuse and academic struggles. Many have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. These diagnoses say nothing about a kid’s intelligence or their ability to succeed. It says more about the failure of mainstream education in tapping into the giftedness of all students. At Capstone, we believe that all kids are smart and talented. However, some kids haven’t figured out how to get their intelligence onto paper and others haven’t discovered their talent areas. Our teacher evaluates the residents and designs a plan to help the residents learn how to learn. Recommendations are made to parents and residents on the steps to take to continue the learning process and improve academic performance.
